CARBONDALE – Last week, the 101-year-old Carbondale Community High School building on North Springer Street was torn down. Community organizers worked with the City of Carbondale to offer bricks from the demolished building as a scholarship fundraiser last Saturday. Due to the overwhelming response, another fundraising event will happen this Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m.

More than $2,300 has already been raised for the CCHS Education Foundation, which is organized for charitable, scientific, and educational purposes, including but not limited to promoting, encouraging and fostering education, developing community and public education programs.

The Commemoration Scholarship has been established to help a Carbondale Community High School Student attend SIU Carbondale. The bricks are available for donations of $10 for the first brick and $5 for each brick thereafter. Additional donations are welcome. There may also be a limited number of other architectural items available.

Bricks must be picked up in person on Saturday during the event. At this time, there are no plans to offer shipping. Parking will be available on High Street, and the fundraising booth will be set up near “The Wall” on High Street.
