MURPHYSBORO – A man wanted in a deadly Wednesday shooting and stabbing in Murphysboro is now in custody.
The Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office says 49-year-old Daron L. Woods surrendered himself to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office just before 9 Thursday night without incident.
State’s Attorney Joseph Cervantez charged Woods with two counts of First-degree Murder related to the death of 29-year-old Maurice Funches.
Woods is set to appear before a Jackson County judge today for a detention hearing.
Cervantez explained that the Murphysboro Police Department responded to a shooting incident in the 200 block of North 13th Street in Murphysboro Wednesday. Funches was found at the scene with a gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel arrived, but life saving measures were eventually exhausted, and Funches was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Murphysboro Police Department and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office began the investigation and identified Woods as the suspect. Cervantez then charged Woods with two counts of First-degree Murder and one count of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon. Cervantez said other charges for Woods may be forthcoming.
The investigation suggests that two individuals were involved in an altercation, and that during the altercation, Woods wielded a knife and stabbed Clyde Boozer. A third individual, Funches, intervened to assist Boozer and was later shot and killed by Woods. Boozer was later treated at Carbondale Memorial Hospital for his injuries and released.
A no-bond arrest warrant was issued early Thursday morning through the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office for the Woods’ arrest.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by the family of Maurice Funches to help pay for funeral expenses.
