ELKVILLE – A Dowell man died in a two-vehicle crash in Jackson County Thursday.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to the crash on U.S. 51 at Royalton Road in Elkville around 6:40 p.m. The Elkville Police Department and the Jackson County Ambulance Service also responded to the call.

A preliminary investigation shows a maroon 2018 Ford Fusion, driven by 18-year-old Kristopher Moore of Salem, was southbound on U.S. 51, turning left to go east onto Royalton Road. At the same time, a 1978 Jeep, driven by 37-year-old Levi Barnett of Dowell, was traveling north on U.S. 51. The Ford Fusion turned into the path of the Jeep and the two vehicles collided. The Jeep overturned and the Jeep’s body separated from the frame. Barnett, and a juvenile passenger from Dowell, were ejected from the Jeep. Barnett was pronounced dead at the scene. Moore, his juvenile passenger also from Salem, and Barnett’s juvenile passenger were all transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

Moore was cited for Failure to Yield Turning Left. The roadway was closed for about 2.5 hours.

The crash is being investigated by the sheriff’s office Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.

The Elkville Police Department, Jackson County Ambulance Service, the Jackson County Coroner’s Office, Elkville Fire Department, and Dowell Fire Department all assisted on the call.
