WEST FRANKFORT – Sandra Johnson, of West Frankfort, IL, passed away at 12:40 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, 2023 with her family surrounding her. She was 74.
Sandy was born on March 7, 1949 to Jake and Genevieve (Lee) Durbin in Springfield, Missouri, but if you asked her Mountain View, California was home. Sandy married David Johnson in 1969.
She loved working as a key punch operator for the phone company when she was younger. Her biggest job was taking care of her kids. She later worked for Kmart in West Frankfort for the better part of 22 years, where you would find her working in Electronics or Layaway.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in West Frankfort. She attended church services there until 2020, when she would watch the live feed from home.
She loved her three kids and four grandchildren so much. There was never a time when she would say no when one of them needed her. She loved taking care of her cats and dog. She always looked forward to going to sit and have coffee with her friend, Brenda, or to sit on the phone with her lifelong friend of 69+ years, Shirley, but most of all she enjoyed being with her family and doing for them.
Sandy was proceeded in death by her son Brian, son in law Johnnie Dossett, her brother Harold Durbin, and 4 sisters Pam Holt, Sue Nicholson, Wanda Mae Hughes, and LaVerne Dolan.
Sandy is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, David Johnson, her son Mark, daughter Laura (Aaron) Gajowiak, grandkids Shawn, Allison, and Alex Dossett, Genny Johnson, and her brother Rick Durbin.
Visitation will be at the Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort, IL on Friday, March 17 from 5-8 p.m. Her funeral will be at the Union Funeral Home on Saturday, March 18 at 11 a.m. with Mike Periman officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale, IL.
