(IOCI RADIO) – The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) is adding training and resources to better serve LGBTQIA+ youth in care.
“Studies have shown that about 30% of kids in the system identify as LGBTQIA+,” DCFS Spokesperson Deborah Lopez said. “That’s why it’s important that foster parents understand the need for youth to be in a safe space.”
DCFS staff will be required to take a similar course as well. Lopez said they are trying to address other challenges LGBTQIA+ youth face, such as homelessness and gender bias.
