CARBONDALE – Carbondale Police recently released the name of that pedestrian who died after being struck by a train a week ago today between the 400 block of North Washington Street and North Illinois Avenue
Police said it was 22-year-old Michael L. Sykes-Branch of Carbondale.
At 11:30 a.m. on May 24, Carbondale police officers responded to the railroad tracks in the reported area where the train struck Sykes-Branch.
Officers immediately began providing life-saving medical treatment to Sykes-Branch. The Jackson County Ambulance Service also treated and drove the victim to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Sykes-Branch was later transferred to a St. Louis hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.The crash caused all railroad crossings to be closed for an hour because of the train blocking the crossings to through traffic.
Police learned Thursday that Sykes-Branch passed away at a St. Louis area hospital from injuries sustained from the accident.
Police said at this point in the investigation, there is not any evidence to support any foul play is involved.
The death investigation is ongoing.
