FRANKLIN COUNTY – One person was killed and two others injured in a three-vehicle crash in Franklin County Wednesday morning.
According to Illinois State Police, around 10:50 p.m. a pickup truck driven by 57-year-old Debra S. Miller of Bonnie was traveling eastbound on Park Street at Illinois 148 in Valier as a SUV driven by 32-year-old Britney T. Giacone of West Frankfort was traveling southbound and a semi with trailer driven by 44-year-old Michael R. Payne of Stonefort was traveling northbound in the same location.
For an unknown reason, Miller failed to yield at the stop intersection and entered the southbound lane of Illinois 148 and struck the passenger side of Giacone’s vehicle. Due to impact, Giacone’s vehicle spun into the northbound lane and was struck in the rear with the front of Payne’s semi.
Giacone was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead on scene by the Franklin County Coroner. Giacone’s passengers – a five-year-old girl and a two-year-old boy both from West Frankfort – were flown to a regional hospital with life-threatening injuries. Miller and Payne did not report any injuries on scene.
Miller was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.
Illinois 148 was closed for 3.5 hours.
