Man Facing Firearm, Burglary Charges After Police Search

MT. VERNON – A man is facing charges after members of the Mt. Vernon Police Department/Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department High Risk Team served a burglary related search warrant at 700 Main Street, Apt. 104 in Mt. Vernon Friday.

According to Mt. Vernon Police, the warrant was secured as part of an ongoing investigation by the police department’s Detective Division related to a residential burglary where firearms were stolen.

Additionally, an arrest warrant was issued for the resident, 20-year-old Jacob I. Lopez, charging him with the Residential Burglary. Bond on the warrant was set at $75,000 (10% applies).

Lopez has made numerous threats to local law enforcement indicating he would shoot and kill any officer he could.

The High Risk team was able to secure the apartment and take Lopez into custody without incident.

During a search of the apartment, detectives located a loaded handgun. The handgun was one stolen during the burglary that Lopez’s warrant was issued for. In addition to the warrant, Lopez was also charged with Possession of a Stolen Firearm. Bond on the new charge is to be set.

Lopez was lodged in the Jefferson County Justice Center. He is considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
