FRANKLIN CO. – A Friday night accident on Interstate 57 in Franklin County that left one man dead is under investigation.
According to a release from the ISP, the accident occurred near the West Frankfort exit at milepost 64 when a West City Police Officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. The driver refused to stop and sped down the southbound lanes, attempting to pass another vehicle on the inside shoulder before colliding with the vehicle and coming to rest in the center median. The driver then left the vehicle and ran into traffic in the northbound lanes, where he was killed by oncoming traffic.
The names of those involved are being withheld and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
