Illinois legislators are attempting to expand protection for immigrants. One proposal would allow Illinois schools, medical facilities, and places of worship to deny access to federal immigration authorities or local law enforcement working on their behalf. Another proposal would limit cooperation and communication between police and immigration authorities. Advocates for the measures say this would essentially give the state “sanctuary status”. Democratic State Rep Emanuel Chris Welch filed the legislation earlier this month but it’s uncertain if the measures will be approved.
