13,000 prison staff in Illinois are now trained to deal with mentally ill inmates according to Governor Bruce Rauner. Over the past year two-day training courses have been offered to help staff better understand conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Rauner says this was part of his administration’s goal of fixing Illinois’ criminal justice system. Governor Rauner’s administration also says about a quarter of the state’s 43,800 inmates suffer from a mental illness.
