The authenticity “Vice” has resonated with fans — the song was released Monday (July 18) and already hit the No. 1 slot on the iTunes all-genre songs chart. Lambert, clearly overwhelmed by the fast success, expressed her heartfelt thanks to fans for walking with her along the way and crediting music for much of her healing during a difficult time.
Next to a screenshot of her song at No. 1 on iTunes, she writes on Instagram:
“The last year of my life has been one of heartache and healing, … Of learning to be honest …. Accepting the flaws and celebrating the smiles. Finding peace in dark places … having some moments alone with me. Facing fears and feelings… All of them. I got to know my guitars…became friends with a pencil and paper … Used melodies to lead me places I had never been…. Made music with my friends. Because music is medicine. This means the world to me. Thank you for joining me on this journey. #vice #musicismedicine”
Lambert and Blake Shelton divorced in July or 2015, and though she has navigated the situation with grace and poise, the “Automatic” star has at times let fans in on a glimpse of what she was feeling, alluding to the situation onstage and when accepting awards. But her new single gives a clearer picture of the struggle. She says “Vice” is a true reflection of herself, deeming it “me being who I am.”
“Sometimes when we’re not [sunshine and roses] we find things that make us feel better at the moment. That’s what a vice is,” she explains about the tune’s theme. “I think when you go through something in your life that’s hard, you learn what you run to and what you run from.”
That’s a feeling she believes most of us can relate to.
“I hope that everybody that hears it can feel like they’re not on an island,” she adds. “We all have things in our life that aren’t necessarily pleasant to talk about, but this song is as honest as you can get about emotions and letting raw emotions live where they live until you move on to a happier place.”
“Vice” is currently available on iTunes, but no word yet on when Lambert’s full album is expected.
