Carterville Police are warning people of a growing phishing scam on social media sites such as Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook. A post on the police departments Facebook page says the scam starts with messages saying the sender has photos and personal information of the recipient. The sender then threatens to release the information if the recipient does not send explicit photos. The sender may send multiple messages under different usernames and these messages should be deleted. The recipient is encouraged to block the sender and if messages continue police suggest deleting the account altogether. Using the appropriate privacy settings may prevent this type of phishing.
