The recent storms have created some extra risk when it comes to outdoor activities in Southern Illinois. Saline County Sheriff Keith Brown says 19 year-old Jordan Mitchell from Carrier Mills and his 17 year-old friend were kayaking in South Fork Creek when their kayak overturned. The teen escaped the creek while Mitchell hung on to nearby tree limbs until responders arrived to rescue him by boat. Sheriff Brown says the South Fork Creek rose from 4 feet on Wednesday to almost 14 feet by noon on Thursday.
