One lane of southbound I-57 has reopened north of Benton at the site of a semi accident and fire earlier this morning near Petroff Road.  According to Franklin County Emergency Management, the semi was hauling several small containers of oil and other materials. Officials extinguished the fire and contained other materials from the truck.  Again, one lane has reopened, but traffic will be slow going in that stretch for the time being.  Motorists may still want to seek an alternate route.

UPDATE: Illinois State Police say just after 5am, Shane Blumhorst of Nashville was going south on I-57 at milepost 73 near the Petroff Road overpass in Benton when he said his semi began drifting towards the right side of the roadway and was unable to gain control of the vehicle. Blumhorst went on to say his trailer struck the bridge support on the overpass. His semi went off the roadway on the right side and entered into a ditch. The semi remained upright, but debris from it caught on fire caused by the trailer hitting the bridge. The semi did not catch on fire. No injuries were reported. Blumhorst was cited for improper lane usage.
