“Millionaire Tax” Falls in House for Second Time in Less Than a Year

Springfield — For the second time in less than a year state lawmakers are killing the proposal of the so-called “millionaire tax.” House Speaker Michael Madigan proposed the bill. It would impose a flat surtax on individuals and businesses with incomes above one-million dollars. The bill made it through the Senate but was shot down yesterday in the Full House, failing by three votes to get to the necessary 71 needed for passage. Madigan said that the money made from the tax would have gone to public schools on a per-student basis.
