Woman Shot by Police in Marion Hostage Standoff Sues City

Marion (AP) — A woman who was shot by police during a hostage situation in Marion last year is suing the city, members of its police department and the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office. The Southern Illinoisan reports that Samantha Holmes filed the lawsuit in relation to an incident that happened last April when Holmes was shot in her right hip and buttocks during a four-hour standoff in which her hostage taker Joshua Green was shot and killed by police. Her attorney says Holmes’s injuries required surgery and use of a colostomy bag. In the lawsuit Holmes states that the officers disregarded her safety and were in violation of procedure. An attorney for the city is calling Holmes’ injury an “unfortunate accident.”
