Union Co. – An Alexander County man is set to spend the next 5-years in prison after bribing a police officer during a traffic stop. According to a release from the Union County State’s Attorney’s Office, Michael Goldsmith of Thebes was sentenced on one count of bribery. The sentencing stems from a traffic stop that happened in May of last year when Goldsmith was stopped and found to be in possession of a controlled substance. Goldsmith offered the officer cash and a motorcycle in an attempt to avoid arrest. In addition to the 5-year sentence, Goldsmith will also serve two-years of supervised release.
