“This is the most excited I’ve been about a new album since the release of my second record,” Shelton admits in a press release.
The singer released the album’s lead single, “Came Here to Forget,” on Tuesday (March 8), and the song immediately jumped to the top spot on iTunes’ country chart.
Written by Craig Wiseman and Deric Ruttan, “Came Here to Forget,” is a close-up look at a couple’s encounter at a bar. “I’ve had a lot of music over the years,” Shelton says, “but I don’t think I’ve ever had a song before that’s such a direct look into my life.”
The song flirts with tabloid-esque lyrics, hinting at Shelton’s much-publicized relationship with Gwen Stefani without saying it outright: “Girl you gettin’ over him, and I’m gettin’ over her,” Shelton sings.
Shelton is also the subject of an upcoming exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame, and he will headline at Country Jam 2016 in Colorado in June.
