Herrin — Property taxes are going up a whopping 27-and-a-half-percent in Herrin; but that’s only half of the original proposal the Herrin City Council was considering. The move was made official after a unanimous vote from the City Council at a meeting Monday night. A packed crowd of citizens voiced their concerns about the tax-raise, hoping to convince the council of other possible solutions. The original proposal would have raised property taxes to 54 percent but was cut in half amid concerns from citizens. The raised tax will average an added ten dollars per month to homes for a $100,000 dollar home.
