Fire in Vacant Herrin Building Under Investigation

A fire at a vacant home in Herrin yesterday is under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office. According to reports from the Herrin Police Department, fire crews were called to a building on the corner of 14th and Grand Streets at around 4:00 yesterday afternoon that once housed a nursing home, but has been empty for two years. Marion Fire Crews assisted Herrin Fire Fighters in putting out the blaze, which they were able to hold to the attic of the building. The building suffered major damage but is not considered a total loss.
