Springfield – State Police, the Department of Transportation and others are reminding drivers to be on the lookout for deer while driving as we enter the fall season. Around 80 percent of accidents involving deer in the state happen in October, November and December. Last year, the number of crashes in Illinois rose to more than 15,000, including 288 in Jackson County, good for 10th in the state. Four people statewide were killed last year in collisions with deer. Some helpful tips to avoid collisions with deer include reducing your speed near fields, wooded areas and water-ways, slowing down to a stop when you see a deer instead of swerving to avoid it, and knowing that if you see one deer, it is likely that others are nearby.
