Lawmakers Weighing Automatic Voter Registration

Springfield — State lawmakers are planning to debate next week on a plan that would simplify voter registration by making it automatic whenever someone renews their driver’s license or state ID card. The move is patterned after an Oregon law and would mean a change to the current practice in Illinois under which a person is asked if they want to register. Proponents say the change would improve the state’s current 70-percent voter registration rate, but opponents say it would result in uninformed voters going to the polls.
