Classes in All Benton Schools Canceled Due to “Safety Concerns”

UPDATE: According to a report from the Benton Police Department, a 17-year-old Benton resident has been arrested in connection to a hand-written note that caused Benton Schools to close today amid safety concerns. Police also found a threatening online post during the investigation. The 17-year-old is being charged with disorderly conduct for threats against a school, which is a felony.

Classes are canceled today at all Benton Schools, with school leaders citing a “safety issue” as the reason for the closure. According to a report from WSIL, Superintendent Aaron Maddox says that both the school and Benton Police are investigating what they are calling a “rising safety concern” and have made the decision to suspend all classes for today. The schools will re-open as scheduled on Tuesday after the Labor Day Holiday.
