Traffic on Interstate 57 in Franklin County was backed up for several hours Saturday after two wrecks happened within a mile of one another. According to Illinois State Police Accident Reports, the accidents happened near the Benton exit, with the initial wreck causing a second wreck when a vehicle wasn’t able to slow down fast enough to avoid rear-ending another vehicle, slamming into a horse-trailer and causing it to overturn. No injuries were reported, although one of the horses in the trailer was killed. The interstate was shut down for a half-hour. Information on the first accident has not yet been released.
