Carbondale to consider 9-mile residency radius for all city employees

Carbondale CIty Council will consider a proposal Tuesday evening that would loosen their rules on how far away top level city employees can live.  City manager Kevin Baity is proposing that all city employees, except elected officials, live within a 9-mile radius of Carbondale.  The new proposed ordinance would mean police and fire chiefs, as well as the city attorney, public works director and city clerk would no longer have to live within the city.  Many of those employees already reside well within that 9-mile radius. Mayor Mike Henry says the current policy makes it more difficult to promote from within.
