Local Lawmakers Meet to Discuss Controversial Cuts

Several Democratic Southern Illinois Leaders gathered in Herrin yesterday to discuss the impact that Governor Bruce Rauner’s budget proposal would have on the region. State Representatives John Bradley of Marion and Brandon Phelps of Harrisburg joined Senator Gary Forby, as each spoke yesterday during a news conference at The Williamson County Programs for Aging Building in Herrin. The lawmakers are pleading with Governor Rauner to make what they are calling “more responsible cuts” to programs in the region, which under the Governor’s budget plan would include closing the Hardin County Work Camp and the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center, among others. Illinois Lawmakers are currently at an impasse on the state’s impending budget, which is due July 1st.
